Origins Game Fair 2008

<lj:music>Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Original Soundtrack (Japanese Import)</lj:music>

Since this was my first time attending the Origins Game Fair, I went with an open mind and was hesitantly hopeful after the crap that was Marcon this year. Origins exceeded my hopes in nearly every category.

Friday afternoon I was looking forward to chatting with my friend who is also one of my favorite authors and world builders, Ed Greenwood. Not more than 20 steps into the con I ran into Ed. Things were off to a good start! Ed and I sat and yacked about the Realms, the gaming industry, and anything else that crossed our minds for a good couple of hours before we headed our separate ways.

I decided to wander around the dealer's room to demo many different games, some of which were good, other not so much, but the experience was still a blast. I grabbed more dice, including two GIANT D20s, one of which is for Lube, a less than scrupulous "roll and snatch" rogue, and a set of Origins commemorative dice, which yielded a D20 that rolled a 20 on its maiden voyage!! To end the day I made my way over to the RPGA room and did several 4th ed. D&D Dungeon Delves, grabbing as many tokens as I could to get the con specific mins (one was a alternate paint cockatrice which looked very cool, and the other a Galeb Dhur that looked like a little brown turd guy. Unfortunately they ran out of Ochre Jelly minis before I had enough tokens for one).

Saturday started, as luck would have it with me running into Ed right as I entered the con as again. We BSed for a bit whilst watching random chainmail & bustier clad vixens walk by, then hit the dealers room where we grabbed some D&D minis as Ed shared some stories of his history in the gaming industry and this or that Realms product. A few hours later Ed's schedule had caught up to him and he had to be off.

I decide to wonder about the con, checking out the different games and stopped by to say hello to a friend in my local D&D club. Then I headed back to the RPGA room for some more Dungeon Delving. After my short delve I attended the KenzerCo. Knight of the Dinner Table Live Reading. I had entered the drawing to read and was selected. I chose to read the part of Brian as we read the groups revenge on ole' Red Gurdy Pickens. After we read we got to roll a D20 to see what prize we got. The guy before me won the "Get your name in KotD" prize. The very next roll I got the "Pick from the list" prize, but the cool prizes were already gone. Prizes aside, I had a great time doing the reading and watching folks have a fun time.

Sunday was a short day. I stopped by to see Ed one last time and get my remaining Volo's Guides signed. I wished him well on his return trip home to Canada and got one Dungeon Delve in before they shut the event down. I hit the dealer's room one last time and called it a con.

I wish my close friends could have attended with me, but I had a fantastic time and enjoyed wallowing in some hard core escapism for a few days. I am looking forward to Gencon this year and hope it is equally as fun.
